(NO 2169 1020) St Martin's Church (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map, (1938)

St Martin's Church stood in the centre of the burying ground: it was a fine ashlar building in the pointed style, with a nave and choir at the east end. It was mentioned in 1579 and was, at one time, collegiate.

Immediately adjoining the church, on the north side, stood the 'pedagogy' mentioned in a charter of 1600.

J M Leighton 1840.

The proposal to establish a college in this parish church is mentioned in 1527 and the patronage was confirmed in 1528-9 and 1548.

D E Easson 1957.

There are no traces of this church to be seen.

Visited by OS (R D), 20 March 1967.
