The present church of Collessie (at NO 2862 1321) was built in 1839, replacing a characteristic medieval building of narrow rectangular plan, measuring 75' by 25'. The first mention of a church at Collessie is in 1243, when it was re-dedicated to St Andrew, and it was subsequently granted to Lindores in 1262. The Rev J Taylor suggests that on very general grounds, there is only one conspicuously right place on Collessie for a church, ie., where it now stands. (See also NO21SE 2). NSA (written by J Macfarlane) 1845; A H Millar 1895; H Scott (Fasti Eccles Scot) 1915-61; G Hay 1957; I B Cowan 1967; Information contained in letter from Rev J Taylor, The Manse, Collessie.

The present church of Collessie would appear to be on the site of the previous church although this could not be confirmed.

Visited by OS (W D J) 12 May 1970.
