Mains Of Dalcapon

This site is located on a glacial terrace on the E side of the Tummel valley, between the A9 and the un-named B road running from Ballinluig to Pitlochry. It sits some 50m S of the Broom Burn; the land falls away steeply immediately to its N and W, where the Broom Burn flows in a deep gully.

The site comprises up to seven derelict buildings, occupying three short, SW-facing rows, in rough grassland and old garden ground. The N row consists of a long building of possibly two houses and a small, detached cottage: the long building has been used most recently as a workshop and garage; the cottage has a partly collapsed roof. The middle row has two semi-detached cottages: the W cottage was occupied until about 2004 and has water and electricity while the E cottage does not have these amenities. A further stone building at right angles to this row has been used most recently as a hen house. The S row comprises a substantial two-storey house at its NW end, and a longer, lower building to the SE. The two-storey house was occupied until 2000. The longer building has a cottage at one end and a byre at the other. The central section has what appears to be two doorways but much of it has collapsed.

The properties may have belonged to pendicles or crofts: the Valuation Roll of the County of Perth, 1935-36, describes the occupants as a joiner whose property included some land, a roadman, a ‘pendicler’, also with some land, and two unmarried women.

This site was in the parish of Dowally until 1891 when the entire Barony of Dalcapon was transferred to Logierait parish - this part of Dowally parish having been separated from the main part of the parish and the parish church at Dowally. The Broom Burn was the boundary on the north of this part of the former Dowally parish.
