Architecture Notes

NH95NE 4.09 NH 99456 55017 and NH 99482 55010

The lectern sundial in the Formal Garden is located beside the southwest wall at NH 99456 55017. It seems to have been located formerly in the garden at NH 99510 55037, before the present Formal Garden was created. It is on a plinth with coats of arms on all four sides.

The other lectern sundial is outside the Formal Garden at NH 99482 55010, at the top of a flight of steps. It is mounted on a series of steps resembling a 'ziggurat'. According to correspondence in MS 5741/3/11/1, this sundial was located formerly at Gray House, Dundee, until about 1908, when it was moved to Kinfauns Castle and then c. 1911 to Braemoray Lodge, Grantown on Spey, before its final re-location to Darnaway. (Anne Cassells, 4 June 2009).
