Archaeology Notes

NN64SE 53 6604 4001

An area of about 25ha around the summit of Meall Odhar is enclosed by a ruined drystone dyke, within which there is a scattering of Scots Pine trees and numerous tree throws. The summit itself is marked by a small modern cairn. The construction of a dyke around 'Wester Mailer of Lawers', and its subsequent planting, is recorded in the Breadalbane Estate accounts for 1789 (J Harrison 2003, RCAHMS MS 1155/6). The enclosure is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1867, sheets LVIII and LXIX), which shows trees only in its SE half.
