Archaeology Notes

NN53NE 47 59825 36843 (NN 59729 36970 to NN 59896 36743)

This row of six shooting butts, aligned NW and SE, extends for about 280m across open moorland above Morenish. The butts are spaced at intervals of between 45m and 66m. The best preserved example (BL00 1468; NN 59825 36843) measures 1.5m by 1.5m within a rubble wall, embanked externally with turf, which stands 0.7m high. Another butt, 66m to the SE, has been built within the ruins of a shieling-hut (BL00 1470; see NN53NE 46). Towards the NW end of the row there are two turf mounds, up to about 4m in diameter, which lie slightly off line. These may be the remnants of an earlier row of butts.

(BL00 1468, 1470)

Visited by RCAHMS (ATW) 9 June 2000 and (SDB) 18 May 2004.
