Built on land formerly occupied by the Old Edinburgh Playhouse and subsequently the Edinburgh & Leith Brewery, Chessel's Land was designed by Gordon & Dey as a Visual Arts training centre which opened in 1974. It takes its name from Archibal Chessel, a successful eighteenth century wright and merchant who built the nearby Chessel's Court in 1748. Information from RCAHMS (EL) April 2007.
