Archaeology Notes

HY20NE 8097 unlocated

NLO: Stromness [name: HY 253 090]

Hoy Sound [name centred HY 236 072]

Scapa Flow [name centred HY 36 00].

Possibly on map sheet HY20NW.

(Classified as minesweeper: registration or pennant number cited as H 737, and date of loss as 18 August 1915). Poonah: this vessel was in collision and sank near Stromness.

Registration: Hull. Built 1903. 171grt. Length: 32m. Beam: 6m.

(Location of loss cited as N58 56.0 W3 18.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The status of this vessel is unclear. Her size and the port of registration cited suggest that she was a requisitioned trawler. Toghill notes the loss of a vessel of this name (apparently a trawler) at Suva [Suvla] Bay, Turkey during the Dardanelles campaign, presumably in 1915.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. It remains uncertain whether this vessel was lost within Scapa Flow or in the Atlantic, and also whether or not she was subsequently recovered.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 19 March 2007.

G Toghill 2004.
