Activities

Field Visit (2010)

The River Awe Barrage provides a degree of flow regulation and is also the intake for Inverawe power station (see separate item). The barrage is designed to divert water through the intake gates to the tunnel through to Inverawe power station. The barrage is also designed to control flood waters with twin radial gates. The barrage can also be overtopped with channels built into the design to allow floodwater to pass without breaching the dam. A comp set is located in the gallery on the downstream face along with a Borland fish pass to the centre of the main section. The Awe Barrage is a relatively functional design with a number of standard features for a structure of this type, including fish pass and intake tower. The design is successfully adapted to allow the effective management of flood as required by the site. PL Payne, 1988, 5; E Wood, 2002, 38; J Miller, 2002.
