(NO 1599 3849) Stones (NR)

OS 6" map (1901)

Two large stones at Meikleour, supposed to be the remains of a circle. Coles could find no evidence for this, but it was evident that the stones had been subjected to disturbance and damage. A large fragment lies close to each. Visited by Crawford in 1925, who notes that the boulders are situated under a lime tree on a natural rise.

Activities

Field Visit (20 February 1969)

Only the west stone and the two fragments (see Coles' plan) remain. The remaining stone, 2.3m long x 1.2m wide x 0.9m high, probably stood upright but whether it ever formed part of a circle is impossible to say.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 20 February 1969

Field Visit (12 December 1990)

These stones are glacial erratics and there is no evidence that they have ever formed part of a stone setting.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 12 December 1990.
