Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 94 1207 2315.

(NO 1207 2315). A battle axe was found on the W bank of the River Tay under the last arch of the railway bridge. It is 12cm long, with a damaged blade, and belongs to Mrs Roe's 'Loose Howe' group, with a shaped angular butt. It is made of a porphyritic dolerite (Information from G H Collins, Inst of Geological Sciences).

This battle-axe is of Intermediate-Developed form, and is held in Perth Museum, but has no accession number. It has been petrologically identified as feldspar phyric dolerite.

The accession number of this battle-axe in Perth Museum is PMAG: 22/1974.
