Cowan records nineteenth century discoveries of buildings and paved streets 15ft 4.5m below the present street around St John's and St Paul's Churches. Specifically he mentions a 'subterranean stable' of 'neatly wrought twigs of trees' but wrongly associates them with pre-historic periods.
