NLO: Mell Head [name: ND 339 761]

Island of Stroma [name: ND 35 77]

Pentland Firth [name centred ND 35 81].

Possibly on map sheet ND37NE.

Island of Stroma, 17th June. The SEA BIRD, Smith, of and for Boston, from Newcastle, went on shore yesterday on the SW end of this island, and lies on her beam ends, and waterlogged: part of the cargo washed out, the remainder being landed, and the vessel dismantled, as she is expected to become a total wreck.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 11,933, London, Monday June 21 1852.

Thurso, 22nd June. The SEA BIRD, Smith, which was on shore on Stroma Island, has been towed into Scrabster Harbour, very leaky, and with the greater part of cargo thrown overboard. [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8789).

A location near Mell Head may be suggested for this stranding.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably on account of her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 22 September 2006.
