Archaeology Notes

NJ01NW 40 NJ 02732 19283

The remains of a threshing mill are situated at the foot of the heavily wooded N bank of the Dorback Burn, some 215m E of Lettoch. It comprises a platform, measuring at least 20m from NW to SE by 5.4m transversely, which has been cut back into the slope to a depth of 2m on the NE, and supports a low cross-wall 3m from its SE end. The platform is heavily vegetated and it is not clear whether the rear scarp has been revetted with a stone wall. A lade, which has been taken off the Dorback Burn about 170m to the SE, loops around the top edge of the platform to rejoin the stream some 75m to the NW.

The mill is depicted roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet XLVIA), but it is not shown on the 2nd edition of the map (1902, sheet XLVIA), which depicts only the lade.
