Archaeology Notes

NT17NW 181.19 12204 78693

Known as the 'Boat workshop' or 'Boat Repair Hangar', this is a re-used Super Robin aircraft hangar.

Built of corrugated iron, the strcture would have had a sliding door suspended on the gable end gantry, which partly survives.

An extension has been built on to the NE elevation to house a paint shop and the NE part of the hangar has some recent internal sub-divisions. It is not known when this aircraft hangar was constructed on site.

Super Robin Aircraft Hangars were introduced as small dispersal hangars for Satellite Landing Grounds (SLG) and Aircraft Storage Units (ASU). They were produced mainly by two companies, Dawneys and Redpath Brown (Frances 1996).

They were built with A frames supporting steeply pitched roof trusses with a concrete hard standing.
