Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 109 142 219 and 1418 2180.

Extraction of clay from the old river bank on the S side of the Tay revealed timber uprights some 12-13ft below ground level. Smaller cross-pieces were also uncovered by the earthmoving machinery. The site is shown as an Ice House on John Bell's 1809 Survey of the river. The timber which has been identified as willow, is being examined by the Macauley Insitute of Soil Research and the Department of Forestry at Aberdeen University.

Perthshire Archaeological and Historical Section 1968.

Nothing is visible of either the landing-stage or ice-house (NO 1418 2180) that stood at Grange of Elcho. Recent development of the area has included the building of a fish-smoking shed.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 13 December 1996.
