Archaeology Notes

NO75NW 8136 c. 733 567

N56 42.1 W2 26.2

NLO: Montrose [name: NO 720 572]

Scurdie Ness [name: NO 735 567].

Not to be confused with NO75NW 8152.

Montrose, 29th March. The schooner ELIZA WATSON, Watson, of Pittenween [Pittenweem], in working out of this harbour yesterday, went on the rocks near Scurdeyness [Scurdie Ness], where she now lies dismasted.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 10,621, London, Saturday April 1 1848.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8351).

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The prominent rocky headland of Scurdie Ness is also known as Montrose Ness or Montroseness. It situated on the S side of the approach to Montrose Harbour (NO75NW 44.00).

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably suggesting her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 4 January 2007.
