'Polkmyl House or Polkil Tower'.

Information from M E C Stewart 29 August 1953.

'There are....the remains of an old castle in Lower Springfield, the greater part of which is now in ruins. It has been twice burned to the ground'.

New Statistical Account (NSA written by Rev J Craik) 1845.

The former name of Bonhard House was Springfield, and in 1741 it bore the name of Pockmiln. The present house is of no historical interest.

Activities

Field Visit (4 October 1963)

There are no remains of the castle to be seen. The present house at NO 1483 2571 is modern.

Field Visit (20 June 1989)

There are no visible remains of the house or tower of Polkmyl, which probably stood on or close to the site of the present house at Bonhard (1847x9). However, in a field about 160m to the N, there is an 18th-century dovecot (NO12NW 27.01), and within the garden at Bonhard, close to the pond, there is an 18th-century grave-slab.
