A programme of archaeological work was undertaken in advance of gravel extraction. In 2004, a desk-based
assessment identified the potential for prehistoric remains in the area. The blanket peat over the area of extraction phases 1 and 2 was surveyed and basal samples taken for radiocarbon dating. The area of phase 1 was subject to a watching brief during stripping of peat and the underlying mineral soil. A single sherd of prehistoric pottery was the only archaeological material found.
In 2005 the peat samples were dated, and the results of the peat survey were combined with the radiocarbon results to establish the inception date for the blanket peat.
