Activities

Trial Trench (1974)

In co-operation with the RCAHMS, a series of trenches were excavated around the abbey church to test certain points and difficulties of the interpretation of the restored Benedictine buildings.

Watching Brief (27 January 2010 - 10 March 2010)

NM 2870 2451 A watching brief was undertaken 27 January–10 March 2010 during excavations to locate the site of an original trench for central heating cables, prior to their replacement. Two trenches were opened to the N of the Abbey Church. No finds or features of archaeological significance were recorded during the later excavations in March 2010. However, the earlier excavation of a nearby area during January and February 2010 yielded significant archaeological finds, such as a Viking bronze pin and possible evidence of medieval

deposits.
