Archaeology Notes

NX06NW 44.03 centred 03342 65416

NX 0333 6545. The ruins of what was the sick bay/hospital and barracks (information from Defence of Britain Project form, Mr CobbMay 1998), are situated about 111m S of the Lochryan Caravan Centre and about 117m W of the main road. In addition, a concrete structure with blast wall, probably a small electricity genrating house is at NX 03343 65416 which is depicted on the current OS 1:2500 scale digital map.

The barrack block is visible on vertical air photographs (106G/ LA 136, 1053, flown 20 February 1945 and CPE/Scot/UK 307, 4233-4234, flown 4 October 1947), which show that the building was situated immediately NW of the two smaller aircraft hangars. Also visible are at least five huts in the immediate area around the barrack block.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), March 2006
