(NO 1171 0256) A Gold Seal of James IV found here 1829 (NAT)
OS 6" map (1854)
In April, 1829, some labourers employed by John W Williamson found a gold seal about 2ft below the surface in what appeared to be travelled earth. It was 8/10" in diameter and 2/10" in thickness. Several Edinburgh Antiquaries decided it was the personal seal of James IV 1488-1513.
New Statistical Account (NSA 1845 G Buchanan)
The spot shown on trace, as near as Mr Williamson can recollect is the place where the seal was found. (No sitting symbol appears on OS 6" 1854).
Name Book 1854
A gold signet ring, 7/8" in diameter and 3/16" thick, having a circular seal matrix on the face in the form of a shield bearing a coat of arms, was found in April, 1829, during excavations preparatory to building a new house at West Green Kinross. The coat of arms leaves no doubt that this has been the seal of Joan Beaufort, wife of James I of Scotland. She married James I in 1424 and died in 1445. The seal was purchased for the National Museum of Antiquities in 1919.
