Archaeology Notes

NS88NE 153 8797 8593, 8772 8595 and 8860 8652

A Naval SF/QL type decoy site has been identified from a vertical air photograph (106G/Scot/UK 85, 4049, flown 10 May 1946), in the centre of Letham Moss.

The site consists of a circular area of about 50m in diameter (NS 8797 8593) and about 300m to the W is a small rectangular enclosure measuring about 30m x 20m N-S. Near Linkfield Farm (NS88NE 131.00) at NS 8860 8652 is what is possibly the electricity generating control bunker.

Designated RO9 by the War Department the decoy was noted as 'not traced' in Dobinson (Dobinson 2000). The layout of the installation has the appearance of an oil QF, rather than a Naval QF (small fire decoy), QL (lighting decoy) or SF (starfish decoy).

All remains will have been removed by the peat cutting operations, which by 1988 had spread to the whole area of Letham Moss, however, it is possible that some structure may survive at Linkfield Farm.
