Archaeology Notes

NO53NE 59.05 centred 5985 3804

The NE group of aircraft hangars visible on vertical air photographs taken in 1947 (CPE/Scot/UK 218, 3201-3203, flown 25 June 1947) consisted of twelve 'Mainhill' or 'S' type hangars all set within earth blast banks in three small groups of four. Also visible on the photographs are at least seventeen buildings, huts and structures.

All the hangars have been removed and there is now little evidence on the ground of these structures apart from some hut bases adjecent to the Dowrie Burn. Cropmarks of at least one hangar (at c.NO 5960 3815) and the track leading to it have been noted on oblique aerial photographs taken by RCAHMS (RCAHMSAP 1996).

Information from RCAHMS (DE), October 2005
