Archaeology Notes

NO51NW 8:03 5105 1650

An evaluation was carried out on a medieval-style gateway, currently a freestanding structure within the quad of St Mary's College, ahead of refurbishment. Previous work in the vicinity (Barlow 1995 and SUAT Ltd 1998) had identified areas of medieval activity, and the evaluation was intended to determine whether the gateway had formerly been a part of a genuine medieval structure or whether it had been constructed as a romantic ruin in the late 19th or early 20th century. Two test pits were dug at either end of the gateway and found no traces of any wall foundations, cuts or robber-trenches were found in any of the pits. It was thus concluded that the gateway was a Victorian or Edwardian folly. A possible date for its construction of 1901 appears to be eminently plausible.
