Archaeology Notes

NH65NE 28 69867 55262

This site was recorded here as part of an archaeological desktop and walkover survey ahead of a water main renewal project. An L-shaped corn mill of 2 roofed buildings is shown on the OS 1st edition map of the 1870s, and is still present on the 2nd edition of 1905. It is not shown on the OS 1:10,000 map of 1990 or the latest edition. It was built to the west of the village of Avoch. Power was achieved by water and reported to equate to 5 horse power. A small dwelling-type building (thatched) was at one time built alongside. A rectangular roofed building is seen on aerial photographs of 1945 to 1962, with a possible building seen by the burn edge. There is no trace of a building on an aerial photograph of 1966 or 1981. A walkover at the site revealed no trace of a building, with the site now an area of slight overgrowth.
