Archaeology Notes

NO12NE 61.06 15561 27916 and 15447 27900

Two aircraft hangars are visible on RAF WW II vertical air photographs (NLA 68, 3071-3072, flown 27 August 1943) situated within the technical area of the airfield. The photographs show that the large hangar had a saw tooth roof, whilst the smaller is possibly a Bellman type. Between the two hangars is a double roofed building what may possibly be a third type of aircraft shed.

Vertical air photographs taken in 1973 (OS 75 380, 016-017, flown 15 September 1973), show that the saw-toothed roofed building was still extant along with the other two structures both of which appear to have been slightly modified.

All three structures are depicted on the current OS 1:2500 scale digital map.
