Archaeology Notes

NF75NE 4.05 78226 55502, 78368 55400 and 78126 55442

The WW II control tower (NF 78226 55502) is still in use, though now modernised and situated to the NE of the recent large concrete apron created for the more recent airport.

Two half size T2 type aircraft hangars were situated SW and SE of the control tower, these have now been removed and only the base of that to the SE survives. The other hangar base was demolished when the large concrete apron was constructed to the N of the present terminal building.

The control tower and aircraft hangars are visible on vertical air photographs taken in 1946 (CPE/Scot/UK191, 4041-4043, flown 10 October 1946).
