Archaeology Notes

NB23SW 84 21335 33613

Two compartment roofless stone single storey building situated at the N end of Callanish village, 64m SW of the junction with the minor road to the main A858 to Stornoway. The building had a slated roof, but this would appear to have been removed.

Internally there are two fireplaces, one in each room and one has the apppearance of being of a mid 20th century type. The chimney is at the N end. An iron bedstead remains in situ in the main room.

The cottage is not depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1853, sheet 25), but appears roofed on the 1st edition 25-inch and 2nd edition 6-inch (ibid). The building is shown roofed on the most recent small scale Ordnance Survey (OS) maps.
