Field Visit (15 July 1987)
NO04NE 37 0731 4847 to 0729 4849.
Situated in rough pasture about 100m NNE of Craigend cottage there are the remains of two buildings: the first is a long building with an enclosure at its E end, and a possible annexe at its W end; the second which is smaller lies 27.5m to the WNW.
1. NO 0731 4847 This building is situated across a gentle south-facing slope, within an area of rough pasture and heather cover, and measures 15m ESE-WNW by 6.6m over a bank which measures up to 2m in thickness and 0.4m in height; there is an entrance midway along the S side. At the W end the scarp of the N wall continues for a distance of 9m and defines one edge of a slightly terraced area measuring 9m ESE-WNW by about 5.5m transversely. 1.5m E of the entrance an enclosure wall extends from the side of the building towards the S, before turning E and returning to join the SE corner of the building. The enclosure measures 11m E-W by 9.8m within a low, stony bank.
2. NO 0729 4849 The second building, which is apparently built into a natural S-facing slope, is largely notable for its sunken interior rather than the build of its walls. It measures 8.7m NNW-SSE by 6.6m over heather-covered walls reduced to banks measuring up to 2m thick and up to 0.3m high; a possible entrance gap is situated at the W end of the SW wall. A length of stony bank extends from the SW corner of the building before petering out.
