When digging the foundations of the modern Aberdalgie House the remains of an extensive building were found, the walls being 5 or 6ft thick. It was thought locally to have been either a house called "Aberdalgie" or a castle called "Aberdalgie Castle", a former baronial residence of the Oliphant family.
