Archaeology Notes

NC96NE 87.07 Centred 99526 66063 and 99178 65854

Two areas situated immediately N of Upper Dounreay Smallholdings, one of which includes the electricity generator house, seven emergency air-raid shelters and many large Nissen huts suggesting a more specialised use such as engineering etc, is visible on a postwar RAF vertical air photograph (106G/Scot/UK133, 3171, flown 30 June 1946).

A vertical air photograph taken in 1977 (OS/77/122, 168, 1977) shows that all huts in this area had been removed by this date, and only the generator house is left upstanding is confirmed by a visit to the site in 2000.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE, GS), August 2000
