A barrage balloon mooring site has been identified from a WW II RAF vertical air photograph (M/065/A309, 2607, flown 1 May 1941 [SC910887]) immediately N of where Newmains Road met Penlee Road. A wooden hut is visible immediately to the S of the mooring position.

The installation has been removed since 1945 and a school built on the site.

After examination of the RAF oblique aerial photograph (CAM/019 AF623, flown 7 May 1942) the national grid reference was changed from NS 5075 6619 to NS 50690 66210.

Field Visit (29 March 2017)

Nothing is now visible in an area occupied by Arkleston Primary School of a World War Two Barrage Balloon anchoring site, which is visible on an RAF photograph (M/065/A309, 2607) taken on 1 May 1941. This site was one of an extensive network that protected the population and industry of central Glasgow and the Clyde from low flying enemy bombers.

Visited by HES, Survey and Recording (ATW, AKK) 29 March 2017.
