Archaeology Notes

NS56NW 79.02 c.5079 6588

A pillbox, possibly a type 27, has been identified from a WW II RAF vertical air photograph (A309, 2607, flown 1 May 1941 [SC910887]) at the SE perimeter of Renfrew Airfield about 200m WNW from the NW corner of the Hillington Rolls Royce Aero engine factory (NS56NW60). Also visible on the air photograph is a circular enclosure of barbed-wire fencing surrounding the structure.

The pillbox is not visible on more recent air photography (All Scotland Survey 1988) and it is likely that the structure was demolished sometime during the postwar period.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), September 2004
