Archaeology Notes

NH54NW 151 centred 52828 46623

A small Nissen hutted camp has been identified from postwar RAF vertical air photographs (58(A),421 Pt.3, 5046-5047, flown 21 June 1949) situated in a field to the N of the Priory and E of St Mary's Roman Catholic Chapel. Twenty four Nissen huts are visible on the photographs, with one group of eight on the southern boundary of the field and the remaining group ranged around a parade ground. There may have been further huts to the E of the parade ground, but it is not possible to confirm this on the evidence of the photographs.

The camp has been demolished since the date of the air photographs and the site utilised for a small modern housing estate around a street annotated Orchard Park on the current OS 1:2500 digital map.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), August 2004

This may possibly have been a prisoner of war camp at the end of World War II. Noted as an unknown PoW in the English Heritage report of camps.
