Archaeology Notes

NH76NE 8011 unlocated

NLO: Cromarty Bay [name centred NH 74 66]

Cromarty [name: NH 787 677]

Cromarty Firth [name centred NH 69 67].

Lossiemouth, 6th Mar., the MANDAL (sloop), Thomassen, of and from Mandal, which arrived here, 27th Feb., with staves, had struck on the 'King's Sons', near the entrance to Cromarty Bay, during very thick weather, on the 25th Feb., and has since been making water: after being discharged here, the vessel was beached, and the forefoot found to be gone, the stem split and some planks started. [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/69 (no. 3771).

The map sheet allocated to this record is arbitrary. The King's Sons are not noted as such on the 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name may apply to some of the rocks at the foot of the Sutors of Cromarty, which would indicate a location at NH c. 80 68.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably on account of her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 21 July 2004.
