Archaeology Notes

NH64NW 8001 c. 64 46

N57 29.0 W4 16.0

NLO: Inverness [name: NH 665 455].

Possibly on map sheet NH64NE.

Inverness, 1 January, the ESSEX (barque), when lightening outside the [Caledonian] canal, this morning, dragged her anchor and grounded astern: she lies stern on, three feet aground, low water, but is likely to get off on the afternoon's tide.

Source: Shipping Intelligence, Lloyd's List and Commercial Daily Chronicle, No. 18,005, London, Wednesday January 3 1872.

NMRS, MS/829/69 (no. 3660).

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably on account of her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 20 July 2004.
