Archaeology Notes

NN86SE 27 8529 6338.

NN 8529 6338. The scant remains of a circular homestead measuring about 17.0m in diameter lie on the summit of a limestone cliff overlooking the depopulated settlement of Carrick (NN88SE 14). The enclosing wall is now represented by a low mutilated spread bank of indeterminate width with some intermittent scarping.

A ruined field wall and an old field bank crosses the E arc of the homestead and has virtually obliterated it at this point. Some massive alien boulders in this wall at the point where it crosses the N wall of the homestead could be facing stones 'in situ', but otherwise there is no stone remaining in the enclosing bank.

The interior seems to have been levelled but is now mutilated and hummocky. There is no evidence of an entrance but it probably existed on the E side which is now destroyed.

Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Visited by OS (E C W) 21 May 1975.
