Archaeology Notes

NS91SE 40 9595 1375

This site is recorded in a manuscript map of Clydesdale of 1596 and on a later published map of 1654. A search of the area found no trace of a tower building depicted on these maps so prominently. It is possible a mistake was made when creating the maps but this would appear unlikely, as the surrounding areas on the map are very accurately depicted and detailed. One would exxpect to find some trace of the building or at least references to it in other sources, but nothing has yet been found. It is possible the site was a watch tower or beacon, and a less substantial and permanent structure than that suggested on the maps.
