Dull 7 (St Adomnan), Perthshire, inscribed cross-slab fragment

Evidence for discovery: found during excavation face down amongst rubble beneath floor of church.

Present condition: good.

Description

The upper part of a cross-slab, this stone bears an incised outline cross with rectangular terminals and open rounded armpits. Traces remain of an incised frame round the cross. Incised horizontally across the upper arm are five geometric capital letters reading ‘BECLI’, probably a Gaelic personal name.

Date: early eighth century.

This slab is incised with a simple linear cross.

Date: seventh or eighth century.

Present location: in the upper churchyard to the north of the church.

Evidence for discovery: photographed by RCAHMS in 2014.

Present condition: good.

Description

This is a natural D-shaped boulder into which a deep rectangular slot has been cut to take the shaft of a cross. The slot measures 0.31m in length, 0.12m in width and 0.17m in depth.

Date: seventh or eighth century.
