Archaeology Notes

NX16NW 110.01 10891 66764

A small roofed brick and concrete building, annotated as 'Arrowhead' on the OS 1:10000 scale map (1977) is situated beside the minor road leading to Dunnerum at about 205m OD.

The building is supported on concrete stanchions and is still roofed. It is presently in use as an animal shelter, but is probably of military origin as about 30m to the NW is a second concrete target indicator arrow (NX 10872 66779).

On the rising ground on the NW-facing slope of Braid Hill are two small ammunition storage huts with the remains of another lying at the roadside.

The hut and arrow are visible on postwar RAF vertical air photographs (106G/UK987, 4175 and 4207, flown 9 November 1945) where a further small roofed structure can be seen on the image situated opposite side of the road from the arrow.
