15 October 1868, WOODMAN, 31 yrs old, schooner, 70 tons, 4 crew, departed Easedale [Easdale] for Leith, carrying slates and one passenger (Master's wife), stranded, total loss, 2 lives lost, wind SW10, S. side of Soay Island, Hebrides.

Corry-by-Broadford, Skye, 20th Oct. The WOODMAN (schnr.), of Berwick, from Easdale to Leith, with slates, struck on a ledge of rocks off the Island of Soa, on the SW coast of Skye, 15th Oct.: crew saved: master and his wife drowned.

Source: LL, No. 17,012, London, Thursday, October 22 1868.

NMRS, MS/829/68 (no. 2382).

(Classified as wooden schooner, with cargo of slates: date of loss cited as 15 October 1868). Woodman: this vessel was wrecked on a ledge off the Isle of Soa [Soay], Skye.

Registration: Berwick. Built 1837. 70grt. Length: 19m. Beam: 5m.

(Location of loss cited as N57 8.0 W6 15.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the unverified location of loss that is cited by Whittaker. The location of the 'Isle of Soa, Skye' cannot be established, but there is a Soa Island at NM 245 193, off Iona.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 23 March 2004.

Per contra the above, the estensive island of Soay lies to the SW of Skye, between Skye and Rhum (Rum), and across the W side of the ill-defined entrance to Loch Scavaig. The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative.

The Cuillin Sound is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS map, but the term is applied to the waters between Rum (to the SW) and the SE part of Skye (to the NE).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 25 February 2008.
