Archaeology Notes

NX65SE 355.01 67172 50488

The group of buildings which presently comprise Gibb Hill Saw Mill, contains several buildings including a large concrete roofed building. It is situated closest and to the W of a slipway at Gibbhill Point. The building, which is a boathouse for motor rescue launches, has used corrugated asbestos in its construction. The rear wall has been demolished and the side wall has been rebuilt.

Dating from 1942, the buildings were used by 55 Air-sea Rescue Unit. The building is visible on RAF postwar vertical air photographs (106G/UK 421, 3033-34, flown 19 June 1945) which show one motor launch on the upper slipway.
