'Armorial Stone, Municipal Buildings. This stone ... was removed from the parapet of St Ola's Bridge to a position in front of the Municipal Buildings. It bears date ... Anno. 1682'

RCAHMS 1946.

Mr J L Hibbert, Custodian, Earl's Palace, Kirkwall, confirms the siting of St Olaf's Bridge. The armorial stone is built into the masonry of the east wall of the Town Hall, at HY 4434 1090.

Visited by OS (NKB) 5 April 1964.

Activities

Field Visit (19 March 1935)

This stone, framed by a moulded border with a cusped head, was removed from the parapet of St Ola’s Bridge to a position in front of the municipal buildings. It nears at the top the burgh arms, a ship in full sail, with the motto and date below in two lines, ST DEUS NOBISCUM ANNO 1682.
