Archaeology Notes

NR89NW 156 82991 98868

NR 82991 98868 Situated on a gravel terrace overlooking Glebe Cairn in upper Kilmartin Glen (NR89NW 9), this possible burnt mound site is located close to a spring source. The mound itself measures 4m by 3m and stands 0.5m high. Many of the stones exhibit signs of fracture and discolouration caused by heat.

The source of the stone may be from the stream-beds that cut through the gravel terrace.

While burnt mounds are common throughout Scotland, only one other site of this type has been recorded within the Kilmartin Glen, at Lady Glassary Wood car park (NR89NW 125).
