Activities

Field Visit (16 June 1920)

On the lawn, east of the tower, is a 17th-century pier which encloses a standpipe, apparently for a fountain. The pier to front and back has a pediment with pyramidal finials, one bearing the initial D. for Drummond. A shield in one tympanum bears a swan surmounting three wavy bars (? Representing water); on a label above is the motto [UR]BI CANIT ET ORBI (‘her song is heard at home and abroad’). Neither charge nor motto can be traced; the design is probably mere ornament. It is repeated with a single wavy bar in a circular panel on a stone built against the back. The rear pediment bears three bars wavy.

RCAHMS 1929, visited 16 June 1920.
