Don asserts that a Roman road ran from Menmuir to Aberdeen via Stonehaven. Its course would have taken it across this sheet. (see also the Military road running between Fochabers to Aberdeen via Stonehaven)

Activities

Field Visit (6 February 2017 - 7 February 2017)

NO 77761 79588 to NO 81753 81507 A walk over survey was undertaken along a proposed electricity route at Fiddes, Aberdeenshire. All of the cultural heritage sites that were likely to be directly affected by the installation of the cable were visited.

During the survey the ground at Grave Leys was found to have been cut away and no evidence of an earthwork was found. Pade o' France had been recently ploughed and neither of the cultural heritage sites within this field were visible. The Roman road could not be located and Mid Fiddes farm is still in use.

No previously unrecorded cultural heritage remains were noted within the proposed development area.

Desk Based Assessment (January 2017)

NO 77761 79588 to NO81753 81507 A desk based assessment identified cultural heritage sites on the proposed electricity cable route at Fiddes, Aberdeenshire. It was concluded that four of the sites could be directly affected by the groundworks and that there is some potential for sub-surface archaeological remains that could be disturbed by the groundworks.
