Archaeology Notes

HY40SE 7 4930 0235.

A mound of burnt stones exists about 100 - 150 yds west of Crearhowe farmhouse.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 6 August 1929.

In a pasture field at HY 4930 0235, there is a grass covered mound (with no obvious traces of burnt material) measuring 24.0 metres N to S by 18.0 metres E. to W. and 1.1 metres high. It has been dug into in the north and south. No known kinds have come from it.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 26 August 1964.

Orkney Smr Note (April 1981)

A square sandstone lamp with conical depression was brought in and shown. It was stated it was found on the mound; also, on an earlier occasion, a leaf-shaped flint arrowhead
