The waterwheels at Scapa Distillery were recorded in 1981. The smaller water wheel which drove the 'rummager wheel' which cleans the dome of the still measures 1.84m in overall diameter, has 6 arms and 18 buckets. The water supply for this came from the boiler condenser. The larger waterwheel (HY 4341 0884) drove the line shaft and worked until the 1960s and is 1.31m in width and 3.66m in overall diameter with 6 arms and 30 galvanised sheet metal buckets.

Moss and Hume (1981) note that Scapa Distillery was originally opened in 1885 and changed hands several times. It was rebuilt in 1959 (when acquired by Hiram Walker (Scotland) Ltd.) and had two stills on the date of visit (the distillery was still in operation in 1980). Scapa's light malt was produced by Hiram Walker for their blends aimed primarily at the American market.
