Archaeology Notes

NN01NE 3 c. 08 16

An Irish-type penannular armlet and two cup-ended ornaments, all Late Bronze Age and of gold were found at Tullich, Glen Arary, and are preserved at Inverary Castle.

J M Coles 1962; M Campbell and M Sandeman 1964.

The gold ornaments are still at Inverary Castle. Nothing further is known about their provenance.

Visited by OS (J P) 5 November 1969.

Gold ornaments (3) found after blasting a large stone during the building of a wall. The chain and attachments on one of the expanded torcs is modern. An identical is not at present in the Inverary Castle Collections but with the Duke's daughter-in-law. The expanded terminals are 1.4" in diameter and the torc has a 3" span. The maximum thickness of the bronze is 0.3" and the minimum (masked by the chain attachments) 0.15". The armlet is 2.9" in external diameter and 0.3" in thickness. The terminals are 0.4" in diameter and are flat with a slightly hammered up rim.

J J Taylor 1980.
